England manager Gareth Southgate

Today, England manager Gareth Southgate released the names of 33 players eligible for the national team which will compete in next month’s European Championship.  What is notable are the long-term and established players he left out.

This list includes stalwarts Jordan Henderson, Marcus Rashford, Ben Chilwell, and Eric Dier.

Of Dier, Southgate said,  “He’s played very well for Bayern and I know that they’re very very happy with him.  We think he’s just behind the other guys we’ve selected.”

Southgate added, “There’s no reason why young players can’t lead and the dynamic will be slightly different.  But also you’re giving space to other people to mature and develop.”

England’s Southgate teaches us that that highly successful coaches:

  • Make hard decisions.
  • Make unpopular decisions.
  • Make decisions with an eye towards the future.
  • Give young leaders time to mature.
  • Give young leaders space to develop.
