Today I am being dispatched by Injoy Stewardship Solutions (ISS) to attend the Chick-Fil-A Leadercast.  In an effort to grow in my skills to better add value to pastors and church leaders, I will be live blogging throughout.

The second session’s first speaker was renowned leadership expert Dr. Henry Cloud.  Dr. Cloud’s latest book is Boundaries For Leaders.  Don’t miss out on this resource.  There are also some bonus comments from David Kinnaman of The Barna Group.

The following are their thoughts:

David Kinnaman

  1. 90% of adults believe there is not enough good leaders today.
  2. 1/5 of people say the leader they are working with is a good leader.  2/5 say the leader they are working with is a bad leader.
  3. Bad leadership holds us back.  Good leadership propels us forward.

Dr. Henry Cloud

  1. You as a leader leave a wake behind you.
  2. Your wake has two things – Results.  The Relationships.
  3. There are a lot of leaders who get results but lose influence.
  4. There are a lot of leaders who are nice people but don’t get results.
  5. Leaders are trying to get influence but it is driven by trust.  The people you are leading must at a most systemic level trust you.
  6. You will build trust to the degree that the people you lead feel like you are connected to them.
  7. The human heart above all else wants to be known.
  8. Do your people know you understand them?  Do they understand that you understand?
  9. Do your people know, in your heart, the big reason you do what you do?
  10. The opportunity always comes when your passion meets a need.
  11. Create spaces for lives to grow.
  12. Leaders who live past themselves are leaders who can give up the one thing that is hardest to give up.  You are a control freak.
  13. What do you have control of that drives what will live beyond you?
  14. Teams the win the Super Bowl always do three things – Limit turnovers, lowest penalties, special teams.  Things they can control.
  15. Things you have control of everyday drives results.
  16. Your people have to feel you would do anything for them.
  17. You are going to ask your people to do stuff that sounds great until you get into it…You have to suck it up and show them you will do anything for the cause.
