The Summit’s next speaker was Ben Sherwood. Ben served as Co-Chairman of Disney Media Networks and President of Disney | ABC Television Group from 2014 to 2019. Sherwood oversaw a portfolio of global entertainment and news properties, including the ABC Television Network, ABC News, ABC-owned television stations, the Disney Channels Worldwide, Freeform, and Disney’s ownership interest in Hulu and AETN, including History Channel, Lifetime and A+E. At Disney/ABC, Sherwood managed a 12-billion-dollar business with 12,000 employees responsible for the creation of more than 25,000 hours of original content every year.

- 7% of people in a plane crash survive.
- The Rule of 10-80-10. In any emergency, 10% emerge as leaders and lead others to safety. 80% do nothing. They freeze and wait for a person in position of authority to tell them what to do. 10% engage in counter-productive behavior.
- The 10% are emergent leaders. They’re not necessarily the president of the company. Men and women emerge as leaders in those situations.
- In an airplane accident, the first 90 seconds are all that matters.Count the rows to the nearest exit and memorize them. Then count the rows to the nearest exits anad memorize them. Don’t medicate yourself. Don’t go to sleep with earbuds in your ears. Wear shoes instead of flip flops. The first three minutes of flight and last 8 minutes are when most accidents happen. Finally, relax.
- Maintain your point of reference. Know where the bubbles are going when you are under water.
- No matter how hard you are hit, when you maintain your point of reference you stay on course.
- Wait for the violent and sudden motion to stop. The first 30 seconds feels like it is going to go on forever. The emergent leader makes calm decision when the shaking stops.
- Practice realistic optimism. A realistic optimist is ruthlessly honest about their surroundings and what they are facing but maintains optimism about the future.
- Faith – the most powerful survival tool and one of the most effective leadership tools.
- The power of faith and community is undeniable. The people who attend church lives 7.7 years longer than those who don’t.
- 80%, 5.2 billion souls, are involved in religious faith around the world.
- Only Connect…. Connect one to many. Connect one to one. The ability to connect with person you want to influence is the greatest ability of all.
