The Summit’s next speaker was Bozoma Saint John.  Bozoma is the Chief Marketing Officer for Endeavor, a global leader in entertainment, sports and fashion operating in more than 30 countries.  She most recently served as Chief Brand Officer for Uber and also as Head of Global Consumer Marketing for Apple Music and iTunes.  For her innovative work, Saint John has been recognized on Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People list.

  1. We get lost in thinking where culture begins. It doesn’t happen in the employee handbook.
  2. Culture is usually in the cubicle next to you or in your own cubicle.
  3. Competition is not bad.When it puts people against each other in an unhealthy way it becomes toxic.
  4. A healthy culture feels like everyone is moving in the same direction.
  5. Nothing is ever black and white.There’s a lot of grey in there. No culture is perfect.
  6. I was really excited to go to Uber.
  7. I’m a marketing nerd at heart.I’m the best at yet.
  8. I am a black woman in corporate American where there are not a lot of us represented.
  9. Uber’s corporate culture needed to change. People were ashamed to be working for Uber.
  10. A brand executive’s job is mostly external but I needed to change the internal.
  11. If you have a strong voice, jump in there.
  12. I didn’t finish everything I wanted to do.
  13. There were many things going on at the company that weren’t great for me.
  14. That was a disaster. – On becoming an Uber driver for a day.
  15. I don’t know how any leader can sit in a gilded office and not participate in every level of the company. It’s such a disservice. Things just get softer as they come up the chain.  Sharp changes become soft suggestions as they come up.
  16. People are really afraid to tell you when something is wrong.
  17. It’s all about creating an environment where people feel free to speak.
  18. Bring back the anonymous suggestion box.
  19. Ask, “When you come into the office every day, what would make yourexperience better?”
  20. Leader can’t change culture alone. It’s a group effort. It is everyone’s responsibility to do it.
  21. If you have black friends you would recommend them for the job, but you don’t.
  22. Diversity is like being asked to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance… That’s what black people feel like in white-majority environments.
  23. I probably over-share.
  24. We don’t give people enough credit. If we are more vulnerable in who we are in asking for help, our communities will show up for us.
  25. As senior leaders, we’re afraid of letting people see our emotion.
  26. We need to give people the ability to come into our circle.
