A Life-Threatening Grizzly Attack

“On September 8, 2023, Rudy Noorlander, a 61-year-old hunter, was searching for deer near the Yellow Mule Trail within the Custer Gallatin National Forest, approximately 50 miles from Bozeman, MT.  In this stunningly beautiful environment, Noorlander was about to discover the dangerous side of nature.

As reported in this USA Today article, Noorlander was brutally attacked by a grizzly bear who bit off a portion of his jaw.  He had to be urgently airlifted to a nearby hospital for critical surgery and later transferred to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City.  Noorlander’s would spend five weeks in the hospital, where he underwent extensive reconstructive surgery to repair his jaw and larynx.

Noorlander, his family, and Dr. Hillary McCrary held a news conference upon his release.  See the video below.

Because his injuries currently prevent him from speaking, his daughter Katelynn Davis said on his behalf, “Only by the hands of God am I here; I’ve had a lot of inspirations, and I felt the need to share my story with others.  Believe it or not, I believe this attack answered my prayers.  And, potentially, it can help someone from going through something similar.”

The following are four lessons I take from Noorlander’s story:

Trouble Can Visit Us Instantly

How many times have you and I either experienced or heard about someone whose life changed in an instant.  An unexpected phone call, car accident, request to come to the boss’s office, or medical report can change your life forever.

Noorlander was probably having a wonderful time in nature when he was abruptly ambushed by a grizzly.  This is a stark reminder that trouble can instantly visit any of us.

For a deeper dive on this topic, read pages 91-94 on Kindle from my book 2021 The Year In Leadership for only $7.99 about Richard Jessee surviving an Alaskan grizzly bear attack.  Click HERE to read.  Trust me, if is worth your time!

The Need for a Supportive Community

The only thing which saved Noorlander’s life was his fellow group of hunters scared the bear away. When unexpected challenges arise in our lives, it’s often the support system we have in place that help us effectively navigate those turbulent waters.

The Power of a Healthy Perspective and a Positive Attitude

In times of adversity, Noorlander’s attitude provides an astonishingly healthy example of how we should handle it.  He sees the bigger picture and understands a greater story is being told.

A grizzly bear can temporarily take his jaw and voice, but it cannot take away his perspective and attitude.

Turn Your Mess Into Your Message

Thanks to Noorlander’s healthy perspective and positive attitude, he is now using this experience as an opportunity to inspire and encourage others.

He said through his daughter, “Believe it or not, I believe this attack answered my prayers.  And, potentially, it can help someone from going through something similar.”

Conclusion

When trouble suddenly visits you, Noorlander personifies the significance of a supportive community, along with the strength of a positive perspective and attitude.  This empowers you to use your challenges as a source of inspiration for others who may be struggling with their own difficulties.
