When faced with a significant problem, the cartoon character Popeye was famous for saying, “That’s all I can stands, ’cause I can’t stands no more!”  This would cause Popeye to eat his spinach which gave him incredible strength.  Popeye then had the will and ability to sufficiently deal with whatever problem he was facing.

Recently, Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo had a “That’s all I can stands, ’cause I can’t stands no more” moment.

Following the team’s January 6th 112-108 loss to the Houston Rockets, Giannis went full Popeye on the team, coaches, equipment manager (yes, even the equipment manager), and anyone else he could seemingly think of.

A Frustrated Superstar

Discussing the team’s performance, he was quoted in this article saying,

“We have to be better. We have to play better. We have to defend better. We have to trust one another better. We have to be coached better. Every single thing, everybody has to be better. Everybody. It starts from the equipment manager. He has to wash our clothes better. The bench has to be better. The leaders of the team have to be more vocal… We have to make more shots. We have to defend better. We have to have better strategy. We have to be better… We have four months to get better, so let’s see.”

10 Reasons Your Team May Be Having Poor Performance

While Giannis’s words may seem excessive, they do provide a template for identifying poor performance.  The following are 10 reasons your team may be having poor performance.  First is the lesson followed by Giannis’s quote:

  1. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Trust – “We have to trust one another better.”
  2. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Leadership – “We have to be coached better.”
  3. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Ownership – “Every single thing, everybody has to be better. Everybody.”
  4. Poor Performance Comes From Neglecting Little Things – “It starts from the equipment manager. He has to wash our clothes better.”  For more on the importance of little things, read 5 Questions Leaders are Asking About One of the Biggest Differences Between Ordinary and Extraordinary.
  5. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Depth – “The bench has to be better.”
  6. Poor Performance Comes From Passivity – “The leaders of the team have to be more vocal.”
  7. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Execution – “We have to make more shots.”
  8. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Effort – “We have to defend better.”
  9. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Creativity – “We have to have better strategy.”
  10. Poor Performance Comes From A Lack Of Urgency – “We have to be better… We have four months to get better, so let’s see.”
