It is true that the greatest indicator of future performance is past performance.  But there is also a second indicator of future performance

On Sunday, January 7th, Liverpool defeated Arsenal by the score of 2-0.  Afterwards Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez was discussed in this article from The Athletic.  What was written about his performance caught my attention:

“Watching players warm up before the game is often interesting. As Liverpool did some final shooting drills, Darwin Nunez stepped into the penalty area. First shot, blazed over the bar. Second shot, bottom corner. Third shot, weak effort with his left foot. That is Nunez in a nutshell.”

It also stated, “No Liverpool player had more shots than Nunez’s four, but once again his decision-making let him down in the crucial moment.”

From the words above, we also learn that the second greatest indicator of future performance is practice performance, how someone prepares.

In the words of the legendary Allen Iverson, “Practice!  We’re talking about practice!”

Nunez’s practice performance was an indicator of how he performed in the match.  His pre-game shots were erratic.  Nunez’s in-game shots were then also erratic indicating flaws in his decision-making.  What this teaches us is the following:

Practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes permanent.

Therefore, whether you are in athletics, business, ministry, or the non-profit space, pay close attention to your practice habits and performance.  It is one of the two greatest indicators of your future performance.

  • Poor practice performance often equals poor in-game performance.  Excellent practice performance often equals excellent in-game performance.
  • Poor sermon preparation often equals poor sermons.  Excellent sermon preparation often equals excellent sermons.
  • Poor sales prep often equals poor sales presentations.  Excellent sales prep often equals excellent sales presentations.
  • Etc..

Past performance and practice performance are the two greatest indicators of future performance.
