Recently appointed Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris addressed the team on first day of its off-season program.  You can see his speech above.  After introducing some of the team’s assistant coaches, he then gave his vision for the organization.  In doing so, Coach Morris laid out clear expectations for the organization, coaches, and players.

As he spoke, I gleaned thirteen characteristics of winning culture.  Listed below are those characteristics followed by Coach Morris’s supporting quote:

  1. Winning Cultures Are World Class Organizations – “I want to be world class in everything we do.”
  2. Winning Cultures Attack Problems – “We’re going to identify some problems and we’re going to attack them.”
  3. Winning Cultures Have A Plan – Winning happens by design, not default.  Coach Morris said, “Let’s talk about the plan”
    1. Winning Cultures Are A Family – “It’s going to be a team and family environment.”
    2. Winning Cultures Communicate At A World Class Level – “Communicate at a high level.”

    4. Winning Cultures Are Learning Cultures – “I want a world class football education and that’s going to come from these coaches.”
  4. Winning Cultures Personally Develop People – “Here’s the other plan, the personal development plan.”
    1. Winning Cultures Attack Mental Health Issues – “Mental health is real.  And we’re going to attack this full blown and full out.”
    2. Winning Cultures Positively Impact Their Communities – “We’ll be community contributors… We’re going to be part of this community.”
    3. The Most Valuable Asset In Winning Cultures Are Their People – “We’re building a world class for you, and you only, the players.  That’s the most important thing to us.”
  5. Winning Cultures Have An Identity
    1. Winning Cultures Have A Competitive Identity – “I want this to be about competitive.”
    2. Winning Cultures Have Toughness – “I want this to be about tough.”
    3. Winning Cultures Are Process-Oriented And Let The Results Speak For Themselves – “I want it to be about a physical football team and let the results find out where they go, let them land what they may.”
  6. Winning Cultures Develop Skills
    1. Winning Cultures Get The Best Out Of Their People – “We’re going to get everything out of every single player in here.”
    2. Winning Cultures Create Opportunities For Their People – “That is my goal for everyone in this room to collect a paycheck somewhere in the National Football League.”
  7. Winning Cultures Build Relationships – “It starts and ends with our relationships… We’re building that right now with the coaches.”
  8. Winning Cultures Are Collaborative Cultures – “It’s constant communication.  It’s collaboration.”
  9. Winning Cultures Give Responsibility – “As players, now it’s on you.”
  10. Winning Cultures Consist Of Winning Individuals – “The difference in the NFL is the people who sit in these seats.  You guys make the difference.  You guys change everything.  You guys determine winning.”
  11. Winning Cultures Keep People Accountable – “We provide the help.  We provide support at the highest level.  And if we’re not, call us out just like we’ll call you out if you’re not playing the right way.”
  12. Winning Cultures Have Clear Objectives – “You cannot win it (Super Bowl) today but you can certainly start working towards it.”
  13. Winning Cultures Hustle – “Hustling proceeds everything.”
