2 Things Young Leaders Must Have To Make People Say “Wow!”

A Young Leader Whose Sky Is The Limit

The sky is the limit when you are a young leader.  You are filled with optimism and have fresh ideas which can help people.  The future is bright and you are ready to tackle the world.  But how do you take lofty expectations and actually begin making a difference?

On Thursday’s The Herd With Colin Cowherd simulcast, NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell taught us how to do so.

Cowherd asked Cosell when was it that Houston Texans then-rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud first made him say, “Wow!”

Cosell responded, “It was week 2 last year against the Indianapolis Colts, that I watched that tape and said, ‘Wow!’ because the anticipation he threw the ball with was otherworldly… You can be a playmaker from the pocket if you have tremendous anticipation.”  Cosell added, “Part of anticipation is recognition of coverage.”

2 Things Young Leaders Must Have To Make People Say “Wow!”

If you want to be a young leader who make people say “Wow!”, you must have anticipation and recognition.

Anticipation is expecting something to happen and then proactively making the necessary arrangements to maximize that opportunity.  For instance, if you are making a sales presentation, you do not just wing it.  You do the following:

  • Know your product inside-and-out.
  • Know the customer as well as you can.
  • Understand their needs.
  • What are their goals?
  • Learn about their culture.
  • Know the best questions to ask.
  • Review their website.
  • Find out who the decision-makers and key influencers are.
  • How urgent is their need?
  • Etc….

Embedded in anticipation is recognition.  Recognition comes from preparation.  Staying in a sales environment, if you know your company, its products, and most importantly, have the self-awareness to know your own strengths and weaknesses so well that you can read the room and adjust accordingly.  Recognition and preparation allow you to adjust if needed.

Anticipation and Recognition.  If you have these two skills as a young leader, you will make people say, “Wow!”
