A Leader Worth Emulating
Before getting to the most-read leadership posts of May ’23 as determined by you the readers, I want to make an observation from a section in today’s Morning Brew. I really enjoy this daily enews site and recommend you subscribe because it gives just the down-the-middle facts about today’s most important issues.
The writers pointed out that June 6th marks the 79th anniversary of D-Day, America’s successful invasion of Normandy. General Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote two speeches for the attack, one for victory and the other defeat. You are likely familiar with Eisenhower’s famous words from the first speech as he told the troops, “The eyes of the world are upon you.”
It is the second speech, the one written just in case of failure and never given, which I think provides the greatest leadership lessons. Eisenhower wrote, “My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air, and the Navy did all that Bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.”
Let Eisenhower’s words sink in for a moment, “If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.”
The lessons for all leaders are the following:
- During successful times, the leader puts the team out front and allows them to take the credit.
- During unsuccessful times, the leader stands out front and takes the blame. The fault lies with the leader and the leader alone.
We need more leaders like General Dwight D. Eisenhower in our world today.
