This past weekend I saw the incredible new Tom Cruise movie Mission Impossible – Fallout. You can check out my review at 16 Leadership Quotes And Lessons from Mission Impossible – Fallout. As I reflect on Cruise’s career I am struck by one leadership characteristic of his in particular.
Tom Cruise leads by example.
- In Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol he scaled the outside of Dubai’s skyscraper Burj Khalifa.
- In Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation he was strapped outside a flying A-400 military airplane.
In Mission Impossible – Fallout, the 56-year-old actor took it to another level if that is possible. Cruise broke his foot jumping from one London building to another. In a motorcycle chase scene, he wore no helmet or safety harness.
Even though he wore safety harnesses for this stunt, Cruise still climbed a rope hanging from a flying helicopter 2,000 feet over New Zealand. He also dropped 40 feet onto the copter’s payload. It took over two years to plan this scene.
But for me, the greatest physical challenge was the 106 times he jumped out of a military transport 30,000 feet in the air. It took 106 jumps to put together three extended shots in the movie’s HALO parachuting scene.
Tom Cruise owns the results of his movies. He will pay whatever physical price is needed to deliver a quality product.
Cruise is also one of the film’s producers. This means he is involved in approving the movie’s script and storyline, hiring the director and actors, raising funds to have the movie made, approving the marketing, negotiating its worldwide rights, and much, much more.
Because of his high profile, Cruise must also be the primary individual on press junkets and talk shows promoting the film.
