The Peak-End Rule

On page 125 of his excellent book The Diary Of A CEO: The 33 Laws Of Business And Life, Steven Bartlett writes about the Peak-End Rule.  This is a cognitive bias that teaches people will judge experiences “on just two moments – the best (or worst) part, and the end.”

Disney World in Orlando has built an empire on this concept.  The trip there is long, the lines are long, it is grossly expensive, and the heat is unbearable.  But when that princess comes up to your daughter, you forget all of that and can’t wait to go back.  The Peak eclipses the process in our minds.

Someone is epitomizes the Peak-End Rule is Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray.  I wrote HERE about his Game 2 last-second winning shot against the Los Angeles Lakers.  Well, last night he did it again.  Murray scored 32 points including another last-second shot to close out the Lakers in a Game 5 108-106 victory.

Afterwards, head coach Michael Malone said, “The bigger the moment, the bigger Jamal Murray shines.  He’s one tough cookie.”  Presumptive MVP Nikola Jokic added in this article, “He wants to be in the big games. Even though he didn’t shoot his best, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”  The Peak (bigger the moment) and The End (how you finish).

Murray did not shoot his best but finished like the champion he is.  It is true that all’s well that ends well.
