2019 was another incredible year for this site!  I am always completely blown away and humbled by your continual returning for content to get better as a leader.  As with previous years, despite my continual efforts to help you find the best leadership nuances of church, sports, business, and the non-profit sectors, the most popular posts still flow from the world of entertainment.

I have to admit it though, I love every May getting dozens of requests from pastors across the country who formulating their summer At The Movies series and need great content and sermon applications.  I am always more than happy to help out.  “It’s all about the Kingdom”, I say.

  1. 43 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Avengers: Endgame – The end of the Infinity Saga was a global phenomenon and its popularity was reflected on this site as well.  You know the storyline by now – half of humanity and many of our superhero friends were destroyed by “The Snap” in Avengers: Infinity War after Thanos acquired all of the infinity stones.  This movie was about how the Avengers would reverse history and save the universe with a snap of their own.  I also think the Infinity Saga is fundamentally about the redemption of Tony Stark.  Hollywood will probably never replicate a 10-year storyline across multiple characters with this level of emotional investment again.
  2. 26 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Breakthrough The Movie – Christian movies always make a significant appearance in my Top 10 and 2019 was no different. Breakthrough tells the true story of 14-year-old John Smith, who on fell through an iced-covered lake in January 2015 and had no pulse of 45 minutes, and his mother Joyce’s, played by Chrissy Metz of This Is Us fame, faith in his healing.  This film is emotionally-charged and inspirational.  You will leave the theater reminded of the power of prayer and how God can transform an entire community.
  3. 28 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Ford v Ferrari – My Oscar-pick for the best movie of 2019.  This movie tells the story of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Ford corporation’s desire to challenge Ferrari for supremacy.  The film centers on the relationship between car designer Carroll Shelby, played by Matt Damon, and driver Ken Miles, played brilliantly by Christian Bale.  These are two of the greatest actors of this generation and perform at the highest level.  Ironically, their main challenge is not the Ferrari corporation, its drivers, or the course.  Their greatest challenge was the bureaucracy of Ford and its executives Henry Ford II and Leo Beebe.  Beebe, played by Josh Lucas, was a particular problem because of his desire to run the racing program and take credit for its success.  Sound like any leaders you know?
  4. 22 Leadership Quotes and Lessons From Spider-Man: Far From Home – Marvel Entertainment makes its second appearance in the Top 10! The 23rd movie in the series picks up with Peter Parker/Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, dealing with loss of his mentor Tony Stark after Endgame.  A high school trip to Europe and the opportunity to pursue his relationship with MJ, played by Zendaya), is timely.  But of course, another potentially multi-dimensional global crisis breaks out.
  5. 25 Leadership Quotes and Lessons From Overcomer The Movie – I simply LOVED the latest movie from the Kendrick brothers and the team from Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, GA.  The story follows John Harrison, a high school basketball coach played by Alex Kendrick, whose program is shut down when a local manufacturing plant closes forcing many families to relocate.  Coach Harrison is relegated to coaching Hannah Scott, played by newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson, a single runner for the school’s cross country team.  Through an unusual series of events which only God could orchestrate, Coach Harrison becomes friends with a gentleman named Thomas Hill.  Along with the school’s headmaster Olivia Brooks played by Priscilla Shirer, Thomas becomes the spiritual heart of the movie. The movie tackles the issue of personal identity but also addresses marriage, prayer, handling unexpected events, forgiveness and reconciliation.
  6. The Top 30 Christian Leaders You Should Follow On Twitter in 2019 Part 1 – My annual list is always a hit (and controversial!).  The 2020 list will be coming out in the very near future.
  7. 15 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Hobbs And Shaw –  There comes a time in a leader’s life when should simply not outthink the room.  Do the obvious and give the people what they want.  Such a time is the making of the movie Hobbs And Shaw.  The spinoff from the Fast And The Furious series features the two well-known characters player by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.  Here’s the story – Hobbs and Shaw are sent to track down a globally-deadly virus which has been injected into Shaw’s MI-6  agent and sister Hattie, played by Vanessa Kirby.  Hattie is also being pursued by the enhanced assassin Brixton, played by Idris Elba.  BTW, Elba is one of my favorite actors and brings a sense of gravitas to every role he plays.  What ensues is as large of actions sequences and complex fight scenes as you will ever see.  Completely over-the-top and unrealistic but hey, give the people what they want.
  8. 14 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Glass The Movie –  As you are aware, Glass is the final part of M. Night Shyamalan’s trilogy 19 years in the making.  David Dunn, played by Bruce Willis, has captured Kendall Wendell Crumb, a.k.a. The Horde, played by James McAvoy.  Before I continue, McAvoy not winning Best Actor for Split was a crime.  Back to the story.  They are taken to a psychiatric hospital where they are reunited with Elijah Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass, played by Samuel L. Jackson.  What ensues is the trio’s plan to escape and have a climatic good vs. evil battle in front of a large audience.  This movie is actually crazy!  Multiple twists.  A-list actors and actresses delivering top-notch performance.  They did a wonderful job linking in the two previous movies.  You stay linked in the whole time because you know Glass is going somewhere.  I enjoy this movie more every time I watch it.
  9. 20 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From X-Men: Dark Phoenix –  Don’t believe the critics!  X-Men Dark Phoenix is fantastic and I loved it!  Expectations are everything.  Regardless of the poor reviews I was very excited to see the latest installment of the X-Men series.  Here were my expectations – great action, very loud, mass destruction, CGI, and pure fun.  I’m not looking for Terms of Endearment or The King’s Speech here.  Dark Phoenix gave me exactly what I was looking for.  Great movie!  Here’s the quick recap.  The X-Men are now appreciated and are called by the president to rescue a group of Shuttle astronauts stranded in space.  During the rescue itself, Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner, absorbs an energy explosion which takes her incredible powers to a completely new and unhealthy level.  An alien race led by Vuk, played by Jessica Chastain, were following the force hoping is it could restore their society.  As they arrive on Earth, what ensues is a battle between the X-Men and Jean Grey and then the aliens.  What’s not to love!?
  10. 45 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Free Solo – There are few if any leaders as compelling as Alex Honnold.  He is the world’s most famous mountain climber.  This is because he has participated in over 1,000 free solo climbs.  Free soloing is climbing mountains without the benefits of ropes or harnesses.  Climbing mountains in this manner is so dangerous less than 1% of the people who climb attempt it.  El Capitan was considered the unreachable star in mountain climbing.  It is 3.200 feet of unforgiving, sheer granite.  Climbing El Cap is like climbing glass.  Recently, Alex’s June 3, 2017 climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park was the subject of the Oscar-wining documentary Free Solo.  I am going to make a strong statement right now – Alex Honnold’s free solo climb of El Capitan is the greatest athletic achievement in human history!!!  No doubt!!!  This documentary is currently available on Disney+.  Don’t miss it.
